Cómo mejorar los cuidados de las personas con Alzhéimer
Con motivo del Día Mundial del Alzhéimer, que se celebra el próximo sábado 21 de septiembre, desde AESTE hemos elaborado una guía básica sobre «Cómo mejorar los cuidados de las personas con Alzhéimer«, con el objetivo de promover un buen trato a las personas mayores diagnosticadas con esta enfermedad.
La principal característica del Alzhéimer es la pérdida inmediata de la memoria, así como otras capacidades mentales, como pueden ser las capacidades cognitivas superiores, debido a la muerte de las neuronas. Se trata de una enfermedad neurológica degenerativa que afecta al 50% de las personas mayores de 85 años y, aunque no existe cura, sí que podemos tratarla y mejorar los cuidados para aumentar la calidad de vida de los pacientes.
Estos son algunos de los principales cuidados que podemos proporcionar a las personas con Alzhéimer.
- Reducir el estrés con terapias Snoezelen, mediante estimulación de los sentidos con luces, sonidos, sabores y olores.
- Aplicar terapias con nuevas tecnologías como los videojuegos, que incrementan el hipocampo y la materia gris mediante el trabajo mental.
- Reforzar positivamente los logros, como vestirse solo, y minimizar los errores, como perder objetos.
- Valernos de la Inteligencia Artificial en Roboterapia, que proporciona una mejora de 3 puntos en la escala de apatía de personas mayores tratadas.
- Aumentar la actividad física para evitar que se levante por la noche, ya que la demencia afecta a su reloj biológico.
- Aprovechar los beneficios de la Musicoterapia, ya que aumentan un 50% los estados de ánimo relacionados con la felicidad.
- No contradecir ante una acusación de que alguien le roba o que donde vive no es su casa, mejor desviar con calma la conversación a otro tema.
- Abordar con paciencia la hora del baño, un momento atemorizante, evitar que el agua le caiga en la cara y los cambios bruscos de temperatura.
- Dar instrucciones lentamente y de una en una, por ejemplo, sobre cómo comer o cómo ir al baño y usar papel higiénico, y mantener supervisión.
- Reconstruir experiencias del pasado a través de terapias de reminiscencia de fútbol, con fotografías, música, vídeos, y artículos de periódico.
